Date: 24 September 2025Moving day tips for first-time buyers can make all the difference when it comes to turning a potentially stressful experience into a smooth, exciting milestone. Moving day is one of the most thrilling parts of buying your first home—but without a bit of planning, it can feel overwhelming. From packing essentials to paperwork prep, these practical tips will help you feel confident and ready for the big day.
Moving day is usually the day you get the keys to your new home – but there are a few steps that need to happen first.
Your solicitor will let you know once the money has gone through and the purchase is complete. You can’t get the keys or move in until that’s happened – so plan to be flexible with timings.
Once the solicitor gives the go-ahead, the estate agent will release the keys. It’s a good idea to call ahead on the morning of completion to check what time they expect to have them.
In the days leading up to your move, write down everything you need to do, from setting up utilities to redirecting your post. Having a checklist helps you stay on top of it all.
This should include tea, mugs, snacks, loo roll, phone chargers, cleaning wipes, bin bags – and anything else you’ll need quick access to before the boxes are unpacked.
Whether you're hiring a van or using a removals company, get it booked in well in advance. Fridays and weekends tend to get snapped up quickly.
As soon as you arrive, take gas, electricity and water readings and let your suppliers know. It’s one of those little things that’s easy to forget but important to get right.
Even if the previous owners tidied up, you’ll feel better after a once-over. Start with the kitchen and bathroom, then move onto the rest as you unpack.
