My Insurance Story: A Personal Message From Mark Jones

Most people know me as a mortgage and insurance adviser. I help people buy their first home, move home, or remortgage when their current deal ends. It’s the part of my job I absolutely love — seeing people get the keys, reading the reviews, and knowing we’ve helped someone change their life.

But there’s another part of my job that people don’t talk about as much. The part we don’t get thanked for. The part that sometimes gets brushed aside with:

“It won’t happen to me.”

I’m talking about insurance.

And today, I want to share why I believe in it so strongly — not as an adviser, but as a husband, a dad, and a human being.

The Words I Never Expected to Hear

“This can’t be happening to me.”

It’s a sentence I’ve heard from clients many times. It’s a sentence I never imagined I’d say myself.

Earlier this year, just after turning 48, I was diagnosed with a large malignant tumour in my bowel.

Nothing prepares you for hearing those words. Nothing.

The shock, the fear, the overwhelming panic — it hits you like a train.

My first thoughts weren’t about myself. They were about my wife. My two young children, aged 3 and 7. My responsibility to them. My role as their protector.

And in that moment — the most terrifying moment of my life — one thing cut through the fear:

“At least they’ll be financially okay.”

Why I Took My Own Advice

For years, I’ve told clients:

  • If we’re grown up enough to borrow hundreds of thousands of pounds…
  • We should be grown up enough to talk about the risks.
  • And if I’m putting someone into lifelong debt (jokingly!), I have a duty to talk about how to protect them.

I’ve always said I would never recommend something I didn’t believe in myself.

So I put proper cover in place:

  • Life insurance — so my family would be financially secure if the worst happened
  • Critical illness cover — to provide a lump sum if I became seriously ill
  • Private medical insurance — to access fast, specialist treatment

And thank God I did.

Because when the diagnosis came, I didn’t have to worry about losing the house. I didn’t have to worry about how my wife would cope financially. I didn’t have to worry about paying bills while I focused on treatment and recovery.

Insurance didn’t take away the fear — but it took away the financial fear. And that is priceless.

Why So Many People Are Under‑Protected

The truth is… as a nation, we are deeply under‑insured. And it’s not because people don’t care. It’s usually because:

  • They think it’s expensive
  • They don’t understand it
  • They don’t want to think about illness or death
  • They assume “it won’t happen to me”

I’m living proof that it can happen. To anyone. At any time. Without warning.

This Isn’t a Sales Pitch — It’s a Plea

If you have a mortgage, a partner, children, or anyone who relies on you — please don’t leave it to chance.

I’m not asking you to take out every policy under the sun. I’m not even asking you to buy anything today.

I’m simply asking you to have the conversation.

Because if the worst day of your life ever arrives, the last thing you should be worrying about is money.

If You Want to Talk About Your Own Cover…

I’m here. Not just as an adviser — but as someone who truly understands why this matters.

If you’d like me to check whether you have any gaps, or whether your existing cover is still suitable, you can contact us, book a chat, or reach out whenever you’re ready.

No pressure. No judgement. Just honest advice from someone who has lived it.

A Final Reassurance

And just so you know — I’m still here, still advising, and still supporting clients as normal.

Take care, Mark
